Background Information
The conflict outbreak in April 2023 and the economic decline have further deteriorated the food security and nutrition situation in the Sudan. Hunger and malnutrition were already at record levels before the fighting, as one in four Sudanese were acutely food insecure.
According to the August 2023 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, 20.3 million people – 42 percent of the population – are facing high levels of acute food insecurity classified in IPC Phase 3 or above (crisis or worse) between July and September 2023, especially in the states with active conflict, including Khartoum, South and West Kordofan, and East, West, Central and South Darfur.
In response, FAO launched an emergency seed distribution campaign between July and September 2023. With the support of the Governments of Germany, the Netherlands,
Norway and the United States of America, the United Nations’ Central Emergency Response Fund and the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, Nearly 10 000 tonnes of seeds were delivered to 1 million vulnerable farming households – or 5 million people – in 16 out of the 18 states of the Sudan in time for the critical planting season to cover the cereal needs of between 13 and 19 million people for a year, support local food production, and sustain rural livelihoods.
