Ladies and Gentlemen,

1. I am pleased to welcome you to the 47th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

2. The work of Codex continues to be an important part of FAO’s work, embedded in our Strategic Framework.

3. All people should have access to safe and nutritious foods at all times.

4. The standards, guidelines and recommendations established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission are the reference standards for the safety of food traded internationally.

5. FAO's Strategic Priorities for Food Safety within the FAO Strategic Framework 2022–31 emphasize the importance of food safety as a precondition for food security, nutrition, and healthy diets – these are the core areas of work of Codex.

6. The work of the Codex Alimentarius Commission has great global impact.

7. To ensure we maintain the relevance and impact of this important global body, the work of Codex should continue to be based on an evidence-based holistic system thinking based on science.

8. And we should ensure it continues to be fit-for-purpose and ready to address the challenges of the future, thereby contributing to the transformation of global agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable.

9. For this reason, I look forward to the finalization of the Codex Strategic Plan 2026-2031 during this session.

10. For the effective implementation of the Plan, we need to work together in a spirit of collaboration, complementarity, and consensus-building,

11. Using innovation, technology, data and science, and working across sectors and disciplines.

12. I wish to thank the outgoing Chair and Vice-Chairs for their leadership and commitment, and I look forward to welcoming the new Chair and Vice-Chairs and am confident that under their guidance and vision, Codex will continue to ensure the right to safe and nutritious foods for all.

13. Let us continue working together with energy and passion to ensure that the work of Codex moves us closer towards the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life – leaving no one behind.
