Background Information
Restoring degraded land is gaining increasing attention in the context of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration which is led by FAO and the UNEP The concern for degraded forests and landscapes is growing in Afghanistan; more coordinated, collaborative, and informed efforts are needed to reverse this. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and its partners are at the forefront of promoting good practices for forest and landscape restoration (FLR) in the country.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with its partners, successfully organized the "Regional Symposium on Good Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) Practices" on September 23 and 24. This symposium was part of two GEF-funded restoration projects implemented by FAO. The event aligns with the Regional Strategy and Action Plan on FLR, as well as the RESULT Asia FLR framework, (a regional FLR programmatic framework designed to achieve a consolidated regional restoration target of at least 100 million hectares). The event brought together approximately 65 participants from 8 countries, who exchanged insights on effective FLR practices and shared valuable lessons learned. Participants highlighted the role of FLR in mitigating climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and delivering socioeconomic benefits.
The participants emphasized the importance of collaborating more closely with FAO and partners to enhance the scaling of FLR, mobilize resources collectively, and achieve synergies. Developing the National Action Plan (NAP) initiated at this symposium is a step toward this goal.
The project is financially supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
