Transcript of FAO Deputy Director-General, Beth Bechdol, soundbites:
1. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH), FAO’s response to post cease fire recovery in Gaza (00:00-00:44):
This long-awaited ceasefire offers us a crucial opportunity to address Gaza's catastrophic food crisis through emergency agricultural aid and more early recovery efforts. At FAO, we are committed to supporting food production efforts. Recovery activities will focus on rebuilding agrifood infrastructure like greenhouses, water wells, solar systems, fishing supplies and we also will scale up critical inputs. Urgent support is needed to rebuild agriculture. It's a lifeline for countless farmers, fishers and their families. For them, agriculture is so much more than a livelihood. It's a vital source of sustenance.
2. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH), Recently published geospatial assessment shows extensive damages on Gaza’s agricultural infrastructure (00:45-2:07):
The damage caused to Gaza's agricultural sector is both devastating and overwhelming. There has been widespread destruction of vital agricultural infrastructure and machinery, and I think it's safe to say that agrifood systems have largely collapsed. More than 70% of fields once used to grow crops such as potatoes and carrots, as well as olive trees and fruit orchards, have been damaged or are fully destroyed. Over two thirds of agricultural wells are no longer functional. Livestock losses are equally staggering, with 96% of the cattle lost or slaughtered. Milk production has nearly halted, and we think only approximately 1% of the poultry are even still alive. The fishing sector, too, is on the brink of collapse, further worsening the situation of food insecurity, so urgent support is needed to rebuild and rehabilitate these critical sectors, and ultimately restore people's livelihoods. But rebuilding Gaza's agricultural sector, let's be honest, it's going to be extremely expensive and it's going to take years, if not decades.
3. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH), Restoring local food production is key to post-ceasefire recovery (2:08-2:46):
Gaza's agricultural sector has been devastated and agrifood systems have largely collapsed. The entire population in Gaza faces acute food insecurity, with many on the brink of starvation. Immediate action must combine emergency relief like food, water and medical aid. But we also have to restore local food production. Agriculture must be at the heart of emergency and recovery efforts. Supporting farmers, herders and fishermen and women now will ensure fresh and nutritious food for them in the future.
