AUSTRALIA 2024. FAO Director-General's Official Travel
02 November 2024, Launceston, Tasmania. FAO Director-General QU Dongyu visits the Post Entry Quarantine facility (PEQ). Ben Wilson, Principal Director showed him around the Australian Government facility located in Mickleham Victoria. Established in 2015, the $400m state of the art PEQ facility conducts essential and unique functions related to the quarantine of plant and animal commodities and advancing the department’s innovation in diagnostic scientific capabilities.
The PEQ is set on 72Ha and manages high risk animal, plant and egg imports. Facilities are established in managing the import of Cats, dogs, horses, bees, alpacas, eggs, live birds and plants. PEQ includes features such as modern laboratories for diagnostic capabilities, high level containment facilities and glasshouses.
Post Entry Quarantine is the final step in the process of reducing the biosecurity risks associated with high-risk imports. The facility allows the importation of new genetic material, necessary to maintain competitiveness and productivity of Australian agribusiness.
