AUSTRALIA 2024. FAO Director-General's Official Travel
02 november, 2024, Tasmania Australia – FAO Director-General QU Dongyu visit to Elverton Pastoral, a mixed farming operation, incorporating beef, sheep, cropping and forestry into its business model.
Since purchasing the property in 1969, owner Mr Ian Dickenson and his family have been working to restore the run-down pastures and forests to a sustainable enterprise with livestock management used as a tool to do so. This has included proactive engagement in Landcare and natural resource management for many years, focusing on protecting and improving waterway health.
Mr Dickenson is a strong advocate for farm forestry, having established plantings in the 1980s. He has also been proactive in understanding carbon and the opportunities for mixed farming businesses.
The owners of Elverton are early adopters and were recognised for this with a Tasmania Landcare Award in 1997. They were also early adopters of a leading animal welfare standard, the Global Animal Partnership (GAP), as well as the Greenham Beef Sustainability program, a commercial sustainability program.
The Greenham Beef Sustainability Standard (GBSS) is a voluntary on-farm program that outlines a practical set of key indicators and measures to enhance and showcase the sustainable practices occurring right along the Greenham supply chain.
Developed in response to growing market demand for robust and transparent environmental credentials, the GBSS was created in partnership with Greenham cattle suppliers, customers, and leading industry experts.
