Akrotiri Groundwater Development in Cyprus
Spring crop potatoes picked by two Cypriot women in a field in the Kouris river delta. - - Akrotiri Groundwater Development in Cyprus. The UN/Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has assisted the Government of Cyprus through its Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) with a $20,000 project to develop the Akrotiri aquifer in the Kouris river delta fan, west of Limassol. A team of four FAO experts joined the staff of the Water Development Department in assessing the existing data and preparing a pre-feasibility report for fuller development of the uncommitted groundwater resources of the aquifer to irrigate an area of 975 ha. The area, mostly planted with citrus and grapevines, is presently irrigated either from privately owned boreholes or from the diversion of spate flows. Under a second $15,000 TCP project, FAO has provided the services of a potato seed production consultant for setting up an experimental programme to expand domestic potato seed production. Three crops are grown and over 110,000 tonnes of potatoes are exported annually, but Cyprus depends on 10,000 tonnes per annum of imported seed materials.
