Background Information
The World Food Programme (WFP) sponsored jointly by the United Nations and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has helped in a wide variety of development projects since its inception in 1963 and it is expected that more and more Governments will incorporated WFP assistance in their national plans. One scheme for which the Government of Chile has requested WFP assistance is in the Punitaqui Valley some 250 miles north of Santiago, and is aimed at encouraging volunteers to participate in rural community development works designed to improve the economy of the area.
