Farmer clearing land where maize is grown. Once the maize has been harvested, the stalks are not removed from soil to avoid erosion. The maize acts as a fertilizer and the residue left in the ground will stop the rain from washing away the soil. - - Sustainable Agriculture on Hillsides: GCP/ELS/004/NET. The Sustainable Agriculture on Hillsides project has been set up to assist the National Centre of Agrotechnology in El Salvador. The programme to be implemented has the following objectives: to help increase the income of small farmers cropping maize, sorghum and beans on the hillsides; to strengthen the national capacity in implementing land use planning in microcatchments; and to strengthen the farmers' organizations to enable them to make better use of local resources and improve their access to markets.
The project is actively working with communities of small farmers who are involved in all the phases of self-development and promotion. Activities are related to land management, crop diversification, organization and participation of the communities, role of women, communication for development and training sessions.
