The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the City of Rome (Roma Capitale) introduced on Wednesday an educational itinerary of the Global Library of Trees and Flowers - FAO Park in one of the Italian capital’s largest public parks, Villa Doria Pamphili.
Through a mobile application, visitors will be able to access news and information about the various tree species located in the seven areas of the park, each representing seven geographical areas of the world, specifically Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Near East, North America and the Pacific Area.
The event saw the participation of FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri and students representing different schools in the Rome area.
SOUNDBITE (English), QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General: “In this outdoor space in Rome, here at the historical Villa Doria Pamphili, we celebrate the diversity of trees and the importance of urban green spaces.”
Director-General underlined the importance of preserving green areas in cities for future generations.
SOUNDBITE (English), QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu: “With the mayor of Rome we have walked the talk. When I saw kids, they are young, but twenty years later they will grow with the trees and flowers. Every year they come to see the trees."
Several trees were planted during the ceremony.
In his speech Roberto Gualtieri, Mayor of Rome, emphasized the importance of collaboration between Rome's municipality and FAO. He also highlighted the unique biodiversity of the Global Library of Trees and Flowers.
SOUNDBITE (Italian), Roberto Gualtieri, Mayor of Rome: “It is extraordinary what FAO is helping us do in this park. I think that this global library of trees will become a worldwide attraction for Rome because this project is both unique and beautiful."
As part of the event FAO forestry experts provided guidance and information to the students as they started using the FAO Park mobile application.
Covering an area of 2.5 hectares of land made available by the City of Rome, the itinerary through the Global Library of Trees and Flowers – FAO Park provides a unique immersive experience, with educational paths specifically dedicated to schools and families, and a better understanding of the need to safeguard biodiversity and the importance of forests for the planet.
FAO, together with the City of Rome, launched the first phase of the project in October 2023 as part of the Green Cities initiative, with the planting of an initial group of tree species and plants, specifically 85 trees and 15 plants selected by FAO experts and donated by Italy’s main farmers’ organization Coldiretti.
Global Library of Trees and Flowers - FAO Park is part of an FAO effort to make cities greener and raise awareness, educate and actively engage young people on issues such as biodiversity, sustainability, and global unity.
