The “Stand in Solidarity” moment was held at FAO headquarters in Rome.
Intervening at the event, Beth Bechdol, FAO Deputy Director-General invited all present to observe a minute of silence to pay tribute to humanitarian workers around the world who lost their lives while carrying out their duties.
In her speech Beth Bechdol called for the protection of humanitarian workers and the people they serve.

FAO Deputy Director-General highlighted that 2023 marked the global humanitarian community’s deadliest year on record and 2024 threatens to be more tragic.

Gaza is today the deadliest place for humanitarian workers, said FAO Deputy Director-General Beth Bechdol.

Beth Bechdol emphasized that conflict, violence and acute hunger are strongly interlinked and she stressed that nearly half of all people facing acute hunger in 2023 were caught in conflict.

Each year, World Humanitarian Day focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers.
2024 World Humanitarian Day demands to #ActForHumanity and calls for an end to attacks on humanitarian workers and humanitarian assets as well as to stop attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.
