28 March 2018, Makueni, Kenya - Victoria Mueni Muteti, R, and her Ithesya B group with a membership of 22 members (19F and 3 M) in Thange ward, Kibwezi East sub-county Makueni County. Victoria Mueni Muteti, 43 is a farmer, producing green gram (Mung bean), and sorghum. She learnt about timely selecting seeds, land preparation, weeding and marketing. The Self Help Group provides information and cash whenever challenges occur. Financially the project has been assisted by RABO-bank.
Victoria explains: 'Before this project had started we ate once a day, or sometimes two times. As we were hungry in bed we were sleeping together to stay warm. Even during my time in secondary school we didn't have enough food. I was complaining to my mum but she told me that we didn't have money for the right nutrition. Nutrition is part of a good health. When FAO came in everything changed. Everything is about time, select seeds, preparte the land, disease control, weeding and marketing, it is all about the right timing. One of the aspects of the training was very important, tribal issues. FAO doesn't want you to promote tribal confilcts. Now we do everything together, though we are different tribes. Through the Rabo Bank we received loans, and the interest rate is very low, so we can create more opportunities for ourselves and the groupe. We are not worried if FAO pulls out, now we have the abilities, the knowledge. From food cultivation we can now to into poultry keeping. We have used some of the loans to build chicken houses. We are ready for the future'.
