GAZA STRIP 2025 AGRICULTURE - FAO’s response to the post-ceasefire recovery in the Gaza strip
11 December 2024. Khan Younis, Gaza Strip. A general view shows tents housing displaced Palestinians. According to the latest geospatial assessment carried out by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and UNOSAT between October and December 2024, 75 percent of the fields in Gaza once used to grow crops, and olive tree orchards, have been damaged or destroyed. Over two-thirds of agricultural wells (1,531 in total) are no longer functional. Livestock losses are at 96 percent, milk production has nearly halted, and only 1 percent of poultry remains alive. The 15-month conflict has caused acute food insecurity for the entire population of the Gaza Strip, with communities on the brink of starvation and more than 2 million people in urgent need of assistance due to the collapse of agricultural production. As a ceasefire agreement entered in action on 19 January 2025, FAO emphasised that immediate action must combine emergency relief with the restoration of local food production in the Gaza Strip.
