Background Information Millions of hectares of upland watersheds have been seriously degraded in many tropical countries. Upland soil erosion due to uncontrolled grazing and cutting of forests can increase lowland flooding and silt up rivers, hydropower reservoirs and irrigation systems. To help restore land and forest resources in Guinea, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), helped the Government to reclaim upland watersheds of four rivers: the Kokoulo, TenàȬ FetoràȠand Koubi. The UNDP-funded FAO project promoted erosion control techniques and reforested the slopes of the Fouta Djallon Plateau, a very important source of water to Guinea and bordering countries. The integrated watershed management project also introduced fodder crops and controlled grazing measures.
