Background Information Supported through the Jharkhand Opportunities for Harnessing Rural Growth (JOHAR) programme – implemented by the Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society (JSLPS), with support from FAO and financing from the World Bank – the hatchery uses temperature- and humidity-controlled incubators to hatch healthy chicks of hardy breeds like Sonali and Croiler. These chicks are distributed to rural women’s producer groups across the state. The initiative supports a growing, organized poultry value chain in Jharkhand that now produces over three million eggs annually – about five percent of the state’s total supply – while boosting rural incomes, improving nutrition and reducing dependence on imports.
