Background Information
Although marine fishing is an age-old occupation in Indonesia, modern fisheries development only began to gather momentum in the very recent past through both private and Government-owned fishing ventures. The UN Development Programme (with FAO as executing agency) is currently assisting a Government project to help form the skilled manpower force necessary to fully exploit the national fishery resources. Initial emphasis was on shrimp trawling for snappers and other highly priced demersal species. FAO experts are assisting in the training of both sea-going personnel and others working on up-to-date methods of fish processing (with emphasis on refrigeration), marketing and management. The several training centres include the Academy of Fisheries at Jakarta, two Fisheries High Schools, one at
Tagel (Central Java) and the other at Menado (North Sulawezi), and the newly established Fisherman's Training Centre in Tegal. The project includes practical experience on sea-going training vessels.
