My name is Munggah, AKA, Amaq Genap. / I am a farmer. / I plant maize and intercrop it with chili.

In the past, I planted maize for 1-2 years, but there was never any harvest.


(ON SCREEN):


Then I asked myself: how do we earn a living?

So I applied for a job in Malaysia and I stayed there for about 5 years. / After that, I went back home and started farming again for 2-3 years.

I sometime harvested corn, sometime not. That is because we had less rainfall.

In 2014, I heard about conservation agriculture. / Initially, I had many doubts. / I was told to leave the leftover plants in the field, but sometimes they became hiding places for mice. / Moreover, this made work difficult during the next planting season, / since I had to find holes among the leftover crops.

At first, farmers reacted with a refusal. They even considered me a liar.

They thought I was promoting the use of medicines. / But with time, we have tried to create demonstration plots applying conservation agriculture practices.

I asked them to try these at least on 5-1,000 square meters..

Conservation agriculture comes from ancient times.

It used to be practiced, but then it was forgotten with the advent of new technologies.

The main focus is to keep soil moisture, limit intensive burning in forests and agricultural areas /and reduce land unraveling.

The 2016 planting season resulted in many failed crops. / Farmers who burned land had no harvest,

but those who applied conservation agriculture techniques, succeeded.

In the end I joined the program and little by little, thank God, I saw benefits.

For example, if without conservation agriculture I had one ton of yield,

with conservation agriculture I reached 2 tons.

Crop residues are not to be burned. / We must leave them in the field. / This way, they cover the soil and keep it moist

If we don’t do that, the field will quickly dry out.

Before 2014, there was no conservation agriculture.

We used 300-400 kg of urea fertilizer per hectare.

Since we joined the conservation agriculture group, we only need 100 kg.

We intercrop maize with chili pepper. / Before we harvest maize, we can pick the chilies and sell them to buy rice.

I have experienced chili crop failure and that has thrown me into big debts, nearly 3,000 US dollars. / Thank God, the maize yield has been good. We have harvested about 15 tons.

In the past, we used to get around 4 tons per hectare.

With conservation agriculture, yields have increased to 6 tons.

I have noticed an improvement in people’s welfare. Those who did not own cattle, now have the capital to buy them.

Those who did not have a water source or a well, now they can build one with earnings from the agriculture activity.

Never mind what people say, I will keep practicing conservation agriculture, / so I can… I have a big dream.

Script Conservation agriculture (CA) aims to achieve sustainable and profitable agriculture and subsequently aims at improved livelihoods of farmers through the application of the three CA principles: continuous minimum mechanical soil disturbance, permanent organic soil cover, diversification of crop species grown in sequences and/or associations. CA holds tremendous potential for all sizes of farms and agro-ecological systems, but its adoption is perhaps most urgently required by smallholder farmers. It is a way to combine profitable agricultural production with environmental concerns and sustainability and it has been proven to work in a variety of agroecological zones and farming systems. It is because of this promise that FAO is actively involved in promoting CA, especially in developing and emerging economies. In Indonesia, the FAO conservation agriculture programme is available in 152 villages across West and East Nusa Tenggara. It is implemented by 650 farmers’ groups with more than 12,500 members. This is the story of Munggah, AKA Amaq Genap, an Indonesian farmer who first heard about conservation agriculture in 2014.
