Excellences,
Ladies and gentlemen,
1. Today, we highlight one of the most important pillars of life on earth – plants.
2. Healthy plants are indispensable to food security as they provide 80% of the food we eat.
3. They lay the fundamental elements for food, feed, biofuel, and a friendly environment to support the health of ecosystem services and One Health approach.
4. They are linked directly to the health of humans, animals and the environment.
5. The impact of plant health goes beyond crops, yet it is increasingly under threat.
6. Pests and diseases are on the rise and each year cause a loss of up to 40% of global crop production, affecting farmers’ livelihoods, disrupting agricultural trade, and reducing food availability, food accessibility and food affordability.
7. When we protect plant health, we are safeguarding our food security, our biodiversity, and the well-being of people and the planet.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
8. FAO is leading global action to make plant health a shared priority – through both the One Health approach and multiple partners collaboration, including the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and CODEX, among others.
9. We are prioritizing three key areas of work:
10. First: Supporting countries through the development and implementation of phytosanitary standards, strengthening national and regional capacities, and fostering international collaboration.
11. Second: Harnessing the latest technology and innovation.
12. The IPPC is providing digital tools through the Africa Phytosanitary Programme to improve pest surveillance and detection in the region.
13. And Third: Leveraging partnerships. We need to all work together in an efficient, effective and coherent manner with all partners, from farmers and governments to researchers, academia and resource partners – everyone must contribute.
14. This year, FAO celebrates its 80th anniversary – eight decades dedicated to achieving a world free of hunger – and plant health is central to this mission.
15. From 10 to 13 October, during the annual World Food Forum, we will host the “FAO Global Exhibition: From Seeds to Foods”, showcasing agrifood value chains, special products and technologies.
16. Join us in raising awareness of the important role of plant health in food security and effective agri-trade.
17. As we mark the International Day of Plant Health 2025, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting plants.
18. Healthy plants mean healthy people, healthy animals and a healthy planet.
19. Healthy plants help us ensure the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life for all – leaving no one behind.
36. Thank you.
