Background Information
Following the declaration of independence of Libya, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) sent a large mission of experts in agriculture, forestry, agricultural statistics and marketing.

Dune fixations and reforestation counted among the most important points of the FAO programme in Libya. An important part of the country was unsuited to any form of permanent cultivation, apart from afforestation.
