MADAGASCAR 2024. Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme activities
12 June 2024. Andarapaty, Madagascar. Sakondry (Zanna tenebrosa) offer a nutritious and sustainable alternative to wild meat. Per 100 grams, they contain protein comparable to chicken, pork and beef, while providing considerably more potassium, calcium and iron. With the help of the SWM Programme, these edible insects are also an innovative solution and potential game changer in helping to take the pressure off and preserve Madagascar’s endangered lemurs. The SWM Programme has launched a community-based insect farming initiative in combination with the production of lima beans, a favourite with the Sakondry.

Background Information
The SWM Programme, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), the French Agricultural Centre for International Development (CIRAD) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), works to restore the balance between food security and wildlife conservation, especially consequential to Madagascar’s unique habitats.
