MAURITANIA 2025. Dromedary camels
Hacen OULD TALEB: President of National Group of Pastoral Associations (GNAP) , a key player in advocating for the interests of camel herders speaks to FAO staff members at his office in Nouakchott, Mauritania, 27 January 2025.

When Mr. Ould Taleb, President of the GNAP, was asked what the best pastures were for camels, he replied that it is those located between the sky and earth, that is to say, the trees. However, the trees are particularly affected by desertification and [land] degradation. In recognition of the vital role of the camelid sector in the livelihoods, nutrition, and culture of many communities worldwide, including Mauritanians, and the need for greater investment to unlock its vast potential, the United Nations declared 2024 as the International Year of Camelids.
Shrinking pastures are forcing  nomadic pastoralists either to travel longer distances in search of food and water, or provide  supplementary feed. Many traditional herders have also adapted by incorporating semi-intensive farming practices, leading to the emergence of peri-urban camel farms on the outskirts of Mauritanian towns and cities, as they transition to partial or full settlement. This shift has brought about the intensification of farming practices, the adoption of machine milking, and the rise of industrial dairies. And this has come to co-exist with transhumance, or the seasonal movement of livestock between different regions.
