Background Information
Manica Province, in central Mozambique, is a land of opportunity—and of challenge. Bordered by the highlands of Zimbabwe and traversed by rivers and seasonal streams, its fertile soils have long supported family farming. But poverty, climate variability, lack of access to markets and quality inputs have kept smallholder farmers from reaching their full potential.
In the district of Sussundenga, where agriculture is both tradition and necessity, the Integrated Agricultural Development Programme (ProDAI) is helping farmers move from subsistence to sustainability. Funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in coordination with the Government of Mozambique, ProDAI is focused on building resilient, inclusive agricultural systems in the Beira Corridor.
At the heart of the programme are the Farmer Field Schools (FFS), known locally as Escolas na Machamba do Camponês (EMC)—a methodology based on hands-on learning, collective decision-making, and peer exchange. FFS bring together small groups of farmers (typically 20–30 people) to learn by doing, experimenting with new techniques and evaluating results together in the field. The groups are often led by facilitators—respected local farmers selected for their experience and leadership.
In Sussundenga and surrounding communities, these FFS are proving that even in fragile environments, collaboration, knowledge, and innovation can grow stronger roots than poverty or uncertainty.
