Malawi. Agricultural Research - Pigeon Pea and Legumes 
Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) is a perennial legume. This plant is drought-resistant and nitrogen fixing, enhancing soil fertility. It requires low inputs and can be intercropped with traditional crops. Where pigeon pea is a customary crop. In the demonstration areas it is used as the hedgerow with two rows intervening between six rows of maize. - - Smallholder Agricultural Productivity: Agricultural Research - Pigeon Pea and Legumes: MLW/92/007. Pigeon Pea and Legumes Research and Development - Makoka Research Station. This is a subcomponent of the Smallholder Agricultural Productivity Programme funded by UNDP. The main focus of this subcomponent has been pigeon pea. It aims at developing varieties adapted to the small holder and the farming system. Pigeon pea is drought-resistant and nitrogen fixing, enhancing soil fertility. It requires low inputs and can be intercropped with traditional crop.
