24 November 2016, Mediterranean Sea - Team MOAS on board of rescue boat approaching at a rubber boat with 146 migrants from Africa for a first check before the rescue.
146 people rescued by MOAS (the Migrant Offshore Aid Station) some 20 nautical miles north of Libya on 24 November 2016 in the Mediterranean Sea. They were disembarked in Pozzallo, Sicily on the 27th November 2016 after one week of research in Mediterranean Sea. 2016 became the year with the highest number of deaths ever recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, almost a 5000 people.
The number of detections on the Central Mediterranean route rose by nearly one-fifth to 181 000, the highest number ever recorded. This reflects a steadily increasing migratory pressure from the African continent, particularly West Africa, which accounted for most of the growth in 2016. Since 2010, Italy has seen a tenfold increase in detections of West Africans at its sea borders. Nigerians made up the largest portion of the migrants on this route, followed by nationals from Eritrea, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, and Gambia.
