NICARAGUA 1980s. Integrated Pest Management Project
1980s. Leon, Nicaragua. An agronomist talks to farm workers about placing cones containing microscopic Trichogramma wasps in cotton fields.
Trichohramma, a natural enemy of the bollworm, lays its eggs inside the bollworm eggs. The Trichogramma larvae feed off the bollworm eggs, so only the wasp eggs hatch.

Background Information
Integrated Pest Management Project. In the early 1980s, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in cooperation with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Agriculture and the University of Leon, financed a project to develop and integrate a pest management program in the cotton-growing region of Nicaragua near the city of Leon.
The technical training and funding provided by FAO were instrumental in launching the program, which now continues under the auspices of the Biological Control Laboratory of the University of Leon in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture.
