Background Information
Due to a limited timber supply and increasing demands for firewood and lumber for construction, Nigeria felt it imperative to develop better management of rain forests and reforestation in the savannahs. The UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), assisted over a six-year period in setting up a Forestry Faculty at University College, Ibadan. Established in 1963, the University College course included instruction in forestry policy, law, management, utilization and technology. Most of the graduates subsequently went to work for the Nigerian Forestry Service.
