Background Information
Smallholder farmers in Afghanistan are increasingly unable to access or afford good-quality wheat seed due to the ongoing economic and humanitarian crisis, posing an enormous threat on their livelihoods and food security. As part of its emergency response, with the support of the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provided 28 000 people in Herat province with wheat production packages during the autumn cultivation season. Each beneficiary farmer received 50 kg of high-quality certified wheat seed as well as 50 kg of urea fertilizer along with a training on good wheat cultivation practices. The high-quality certified wheat seed provided by FAO is expected to yield up to 1.4 tonnes per jerib (0.2 ha), enabling farmers to produce enough wheat to feed a family of seven for a year and earn an additional income from selling the surplus in the local market.
