Background Information
Vegetables are the second largest crop in Laghman province, east of Afghanistan, following cereal crops. Farmers in the province grow vegetables for both home consumption and sale during the summer cultivation season. With funding from the Asian Development Bank, FAO provided 2 058 women-headed households in the eastern province with home gardening packages to enable them to grow vegetables at home. Each family received high-quality seed of eight locally important vegetables, including okra, cabbage, turnip, cauliflower, eggplant, onion, squash and tomato. In addition, these families also received technical training and agricultural tools, including a rake, hoe and a shovel.
The home gardening package boosts each household's income by USD 60-80 per month for up to four to five months and increases access to nutritious food for up to four to six months due to vegetables production.
