PHILIPPINES 1958. FAO assignment in the Philippines
Philippines, 1958 - Scientifically obtained samples of the important Anchovy and roundscad fishery are systematically examined in the laboratory in order to assess the resources of the free swimming fish species in the Philippine Archipelago. At the same time the life cycle of those species is studied.
Since September 1956, FAO expert Dr. Klaus F.W. Tiews, a young German biologist, has been helping the Government of the Philippines to plan and carry out a research program in marine fisheries biology. In addition to research on tuna and other fish and on shrimp, an important part of his work is the training of Philippines workers in research methods. The Philippines fisheries have been developed remarkably in recent years and the annual catch has risen from about 80,000 metric tons in 1938 to more than 400,000 tons.
