This 5-year United Nations Development Programme-Special Fund/Food and Agriculture Organization (UNDP-SF/FAO) project aims to unify and extend previously initiated UNDP assistance in three Korean watersheds. Specifically UNDP/FAO is assisting the Korean overnment in comprehensive watershed development, training local personnel, coordinating the work of Government agencies, providing assistance and facilities to farmers, developing under-utilized land, building and repairing dams for irrigation, building and repairing canals for flood control, developing means of economic land use and improving grass production. Some 11,000 hectares of terraces are being built in the three project areas to gain ultivable land, and an additional 10,000 hectares will be converted to pasture land. About four-fifths of the nearly $4.5 million needed to finance the project is being provided by the Korean Government and the rest by UNDP-SF. Food aid for labourers working with the project is being provided by the WFP.
