Background Information The Korean peninsular is flanked on one side by the sea of Japan and on the other by the Yellow Sea. With a total population of some 42 millions (both North and south Korea), fisheries is important to this country, both economically and as a valuable source of protein. Traditional fishing methods, however, do not yield the full potential from Korea's coastal waters and, in order to teach its fishermen modern fishing methods, the Government sought United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) assistance to establish a four-year project, executed by FAO and operational from 1968 to 1972. Financed by UNDP with a counterpart contribution from the Government, the project includes the setting up of a Coastal Fishing Training Centre at Pusan in the south- staffed by FAO fisheries experts - and the provision of training vessels for practical studies. Approximately 300 trainees graduate each year as qualified navigators, master fishermen, marine engineers and radio operators, all of whom are contributing to the much needed expansion of Korea's fishing industry.
