Background Information
The Lotus was introduced in 2004 for the beauty of its flowers, but has now spread to many areas, threatening the ecosystem. Removal operations and strict control are necessary to prevent the species from invading the whole of Trois Marigots. The dam's construction reduced water salinity, and combined with shallow water depths, this enabled Typha to colonize tens of thousands of hectares in the lower Senegal valley. These low-water wetlands are disappearing, critically impacting bird species like the Crowned Crane.
