Background Information
Artificial enarenado involves spreading a layer of volcanic ash (rofe) about 12–15 cm thick over soil that has generally been prepared for cultivation. This technique was learned from the numerous volcanic eruptions on the island, which had covered the land with lapilli.
By the mid-20th century, farmers had created many artificial enarenados, moving large volumes of rofe. Camels played a key role in enabling these impressive efforts.
The enarenados form a unique landscape, distinctive to Lanzarote: a diverse agricultural mosaic of striking visual impact.
