Background Information The Bay is the centre of a new mother-of- pearl industry initiated with the help of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)  to provide a new source of income for the coastal Hadendowa people, as an alternative to the seasonal fishing industry. As a result of the cultivation of mother-of-pearl shells, a new. button factory has been opened in Port Sudan. Equipped with flippers, goggles and underwater breathing tube, the Sudan's Assistant Fisheries Officer Sayed Mohamed Ali Awad (foreground) and a fisherman prepare to dive into the waters of Donganab Bay, 100 miles north of Port Sudan, to search for mother-of-pearl shells.
