Background Information
The Purepecha, the indigenous people who have historically lived around lake Pátzcuaro, consider this fish the food of the gods, due to the delicate taste of its flesh. The introduction of non-native and commercially advantageous species and pollution of lake have brought the fish on the verge of extinction.
