Agricultural assistance benefiting rural households in post-conflict areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo: FAO Project OSRO/DRC/701/BEL. The overall project objective is to promote self-sufficiency among displaced persons and host families of returnees by restoring household food production capacity. At Nutritional Centres, mothers receive not only therapeutic feeding for their malnourished children in the form of enriched milk provided by UNICEF, but also training on how to cultivate crops that enrich the nutritional value of their diets. As the children grow stronger, they move on to meals made from World Food Programme rations and the fresh vegetables grown in the Centre gardens with seeds and technical guidance provided by FAO. When returning home, these beneficiaries receive a garden starter kit containing tools and seeds to enable them to continue growing vegetables to add variety to their diets and sell surplus produce for income.
