Excellences,
Ladies and gentlemen,
1. Africa has immense potential, is rich in resources, and brimming with youthful energy.
2. Yet Africa also faces many challenges causing persistent food insecurity and malnutrition, economic instability, and widening inequalities.
3. To overcome these obstacles and achieve collective goals, we need a strong industrial foundation built on more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable agrifood systems.
4. We need to invest in agro-processing, food manufacturing and related industries, to ensure the needed sustainable development and modernization,
5. And to achieve the SDGs in Africa - by reducing poverty (SDG 1), enhancing food security and improving nutrition (SDG 2), reducing inequalities (SDG10), fostering gender equality (SDG 5), promoting decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), fostering industry (SDG 9), and all the other SDGs.
Dear Colleagues,
6. We need to build resilience to the multiple shocks and risks that countries, especially in Africa, are facing and which impact on food security and nutrition.
7. The African Continental Free Trade Area holds a lot of promise to boost industrial development through diversification and regional value chains.
8. In the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31, we have outlined our vision of the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life - leaving no one behind.
9. Working through the Four Betters, we support our Members to transform agrifood systems and deliver on the post-Malabo agenda.
10. To achieve this, our focus is on breaking down silos, empowering local communities, especially women and youth,
11. And harnessing the collective strength of ONE UN through coordinated actions and integrated solutions.
12. FAO is a leading contributor to the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa.
13. Our collaboration with UNIDO through the Agrifood Systems Transformation Accelerator (ASTA) program shows our commitment to public-private partnerships and attracting investment.
14. This partnership also highlights the interlinkage between agrifood systems and industrial development.
15. By leveraging targeted and smart investments in Africa’s agrifood industry, including through FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative, we aim to accelerate this ambitious agenda and deliver on our commitments.
16. FAO will continue to work closely with all partners to build a sustainable and inclusive industry in Africa based on transformed and strengthened agrifood systems across the continent.
17. By investing in people, innovation, and partnerships, we can create a prosperous future for generations to come, in Africa and beyond.
18. Thank you.
