Turkey. Sunflower cultivation
Pollination of sunflowers in a greenhouse. - - Improvement of the Urban Habitat: urban Forestry/Greening Plan for Karsiyaka, Izmir: TUR/97/008A/01/12. FAOà̳ work in urban and peri-urban forestry aims to integrate the environmental, social and economic role of trees and forests in an urban environment. This is being done in the light of the rapid urbanization brought about by heavy rural to urban migration. FAO urban forestry project TUR/97/008 is designed to help Turkey develop an urban forestry/greening strategy with the active participation of central and municipal government departments, NGOs, academic institutions and the private sector. Forests and trees play an important and varied role in improving the urban environment and the well being of its population. The value of forests, trees and green spaces in cities is widely recognized.

The project, which will create more green areas for recreational use and tree planting activities (e.g. greenbelts along highways) will help to:

Mitigate the effects of pollution;
Improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of Karsiyaka, and;
Prevent the risks of natural disasters.

In fact, most of the land has been heavily built up with the construction of houses on hillsides that lack protective vegetation cover, and is subject to erosion, flooding and landslides. This has raised awareness of the critical need for better watershed management, including reforestation of the hillsides, stabilization of stream banks and gully control measures.
