Script Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen
Dear Colleagues,

1. Today we celebrate World Pulses Day 2025, and I would like to thank the Government
of Peru for hosting this important event.

2. The world is facing historically high levels of food insecurity.

3. One in 11 people globally faced hunger in 2023,  and millions more are suffering from malnutrition, which threatens human development, especially those who are already vulnerable, putting them even more at risk.

4. FAO supports countries to transform agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable, to address these challenges and meet current and future food security needs.

5. Pulses bring diversity to agrifood systems, farming systems and diets.

6. They contribute to healthy soils, and have a low environmental footprint.

7. They also help to increase soil fertility, and in this way optimize the use of fertilizers.

8. Pulses are strategic crops, enabling us to produce more with less, they allow us to enhance agricultural productivity, while reducing negative impacts on the environment.

9. They are nutrient-dense food packed with protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals which are essential to our health.

10. For these reasons, pulses are important contributors to the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life, leaving non one behind.

11. In Peru, Tar-wi is a well-known pulse.

12. Tar-wi has multiple benefits, including environmental, nutritional, cultural and social.

13. It can grow in harsh environments, thrive with little water and has high nutritional values, yet it remains underutilized.

14. That is why we are working with the Government of Peru to tap into the full potential of this important pulse.

15. Dear Colleagues, to learn more about the full potential of all pulses we need to:

16. First: work together, with all relevant partners, including the public and private sector.

17. Second: leverage innovation. We need to focus on developing new varieties with better agronomic qualities, with the modern machinery needed to facilitate agricultural production, and to create new and greater market opportunities.

18. And Third: increase investment in pulses and make them accessible to all.

19. FAO remains committed to supporting Members in advancing work on pulses, and to building on these important partnerships for greater impact.

20. Our joint work with Peru is an excellent example of this fruitful collaboration.

21. Let us celebrate pulses as seeds of diversity for our agrifood systems.

22. Thank you.
