Video Message
By
Dr QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General
30 April 2024
Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
1. It is an honour for FAO to be invited to the World Summit on the Information Society
+20 High-Level Event.
2. FAO, as Facilitator of the Action Line C7 on e-agriculture, fully recognizes the powerful
platform that the WSIS Forum represents for all partners.
3. It provides an opportunity to identify common opportunities for global digital
cooperation,
4. And for joint collaboration working towards a forward-looking and renewed shared
vision.
5. Working together in setting up the digital journey towards important joint UN led
initiatives, such as WSIS Vision towards 2025, the Global Digital Compact, and the UN
Summit of the Future, among others.
6. Since its beginning, FAO has recognized and supported this forum’s important role in
promoting global digital cooperation to harness the transformative potential of ICTs for
achieving the SDGs.
7. FAO has focused its efforts to make significant contributions to the forum, particularly in
the use of information and communication technologies for agricultural development
and for improving food security and nutrition.
8. Action Line C7 on e-agriculture has specifically focused on ensuring the systematic
dissemination of information using ICTs on agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries,
forestry and food,
9. To provide access to comprehensive, up-to-date and detailed knowledge and
information, particularly in rural areas,
10. To enhance agricultural productivity, sustainability, and rural development,
11. And to support the transformation of global agrifood systems to be more efficient, more
inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable.
12. FAO's digital initiatives align closely with this Action Line to leverage ICTs to unlock
opportunities in agrifood systems,
13. While also keeping up-to-date with the latest developments to best address the world's
global challenges, through targeted interventions to reduce poverty, eradicate hunger
and increase economic development.
14. FAO has made major contributions to Digital transformation, such as by:
One: promoting digital technologies across agrifood systems to harness mobile
technology, remote sensing, geographic information systems, and other digital
tools to support farmers in decision-making, crop management, and natural
resource conservation;
Two: developing knowledge sharing platforms and digital resources, such as our
award-winning FAO Hand-in-Hand Geospatial Platform that facilitates the
exchange of information and best practices among partners;
Three: fostering capacity development to enhance digital literacy and technical
skills among farmers, extension workers, and agricultural professionals;
Four: establishing the global E-Agriculture Community, as a collaborative
platform for knowledge sharing and innovative solutions;
Five: providing policy support and technical assistance to governments and
regional organizations in developing Digital Agriculture policies and strategies for
agricultural development; and
Six: establishing partnerships with other UN agencies, international
organizations, academia, and civil society groups to advance the use of ICTs for
agriculture.
15. FAO is committed to continue contributing to the WSIS process.
16. Digital transformation is critical to ensure better production, better nutrition, a better
environment and a better life, leaving no one behind.
17. Thank you.
