Script A planting ceremony of trees coming to Rome from around the world marked today the launch of an ambitious initiative by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to raise awareness on biodiversity and the need to make cities greener. Implemented in Villa Doria Pamphilj, Rome’s largest public park, the project is called Global Library of Trees and Flowers – FAO Park. Its first phase involved planting 85 trees and 15 plants sourced from seven regions. FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, joined representatives from the City of Rome and Coldiretti, Italy’s largest farmers union, to inaugurate this unique initiative. The Global Library of Trees and Flowers can inspire young generations on how to learn from nature and work for a better future, he says. “Each of us can take action to make cities greener. Municipalities, private sector, citizens, especially youth, can learn to develop a deeper respect for the future. We want to inspire young people to advocate for sustainability, inclusion, global cooperation, innovation, food security, and knowledge-sharing, because youth are the change-makers of the future”, QU Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said at the event to launch the Global Library of Trees and Flowers. Selected by FAO experts, the trees and plants are from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Near East, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Pacific. They have been planted in a 2.5-hectare plot offered by the City of Rome in a specially selected area of Villa Doria Pamphilj. The project will grow in the coming months with more plants and trees and the development of an educational itinerary to engage young students and their families about the importance of sustainability and biodiversity. This is an extraordinary initiative showcasing biodiversity, explains Sabrina Alfonsi, City of Rome official responsible for agriculture, environment and recycling. “From the beginning, we [the City of Rome] understood that this great project was an opportunity, so we decided to make available one of the largest historical parks of our city, Villa [Doria] Pamphilj”, said Sabrina Alfonsi, City of Rome official responsible for agriculture, environment and recycling. The trees and plants have been donated by Coldiretti. The Global Library of Trees and Flowers is an important FAO initiative to “educate” new generations on the importance of building greener cities, says Ettore Prandini, President of Coldiretti. “[This project] is of fundamental importance to represent biodiversity, the attention [we pay] to the environment in which live and to the education of the new generations”, explained Ettore Prandini, President of Coldiretti. The Prime Minister of Tanzania, Kassim Majaliwa, attended the launch of FAO Park as a special guest. Today’s event took place on the eve of World Food Day, which will be marked on a global ceremony at FAO’s headquarters which will also host the opening of the World Food Forum flagship event 2023.
