Background Information There is an urgent and immediate need in Colombia to expand major social services, particularly in the field of nutrition, health and education. Studies have shown that 60% of the pre-school children are affected, in varying degrees, by malnutrition. The general objective of this UN/FAO World Food Programme project is to assist the Government in its vast fight against sickness and mortality among preschool
children, pregnant and nursing mothers and school children, by providing nourishing meals for them. Commodities supplied through WFP include maize and wheat flour, canned meat and fish, pulses, edible oil, dried skim milk, cheese and milk biscuits, and these items are combined with locally produced foodstuffs. Food aid is given to such institutions as the National Service for Education and Nutrition Rehabilitation, pediatric wards, health centres, nurseries and kindergartens and primary schools - thus benefitting a vulnerable population of over five millions. Other aspects of this Government project are being supported by FAO, WHO, UNESCO and UNICEF. The total cost to WFP of its 5-year involvement (commenced in 1970) is over $41,000,000.
