Background Information RANGE MANAGEMENT DIVISION OF THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY OF KENYA.
March 1970, The range area of Kenya, totaling about 170,000 square miles, covers approximately 8o% of the country and is inhabited by 1,5 million people, mainly pastoralists and subsistence cultivators. The economic potential of this area lies primarily in its livestock-carrying capacity and wildlife resources. The current productivity of the range area is generally considered to be only about a quarter of its full potential due to such natural factors as general aridity, diversity of climatic conditions and animal disease hazards, including tsetse, as well as to mismanagement, over-population and over-grazing. The Government of Kenya, with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as executing agency, is working to promote the pastoral development of the Kenyan range. It seeks to expand the Range Management Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry to enable it to conduct land-use surveys; to provide training for range personnel and extension services for range farmers; and to intensify applied research on specific problems of range development and productivity.
