Background Information
The Rusayo 2 IDP Camp, located in Goma, North Kivu, serves as a crucial refuge for those displaced by the persistent conflict in the region. As of September 2024, the camp accommodates 32,558 displaced individuals across 7,105 households. (IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix/DTM1, Sept. 2024)
Despite its official capacity of 9,000 shelters, Rusayo 2 is currently full, forcing new arrivals to settle in an extension of the camp. This overcrowding not only strains the camp's limited resources but also heightens security risks, as residents remain vulnerable to attacks from armed groups. The ongoing conflict complicates the delivery of essential aid, leaving many without adequate food, clean water, and medical care. The humanitarian situation is dire; organizations strive to provide emergency assistance. However, supply often fails to meet the overwhelming demand, leading to nutritional deficiencies among residents and exacerbating the challenges faced in this precarious environment. As humanitarian efforts continue, the need for sustained support remains critical to address the complex needs of those living in Rusayo 2.
FAO intervention focuses on enhancing the resilience of internally displaced households, representing approximately 39,000 individuals, along with the host families in North Kivu. Through a multi-faceted approach that combines agricultural support, cash transfers, and community engagement, the project addresses the urgent need to reduce reliance on humanitarian aid among vulnerable populations. FAO contributes its agricultural expertise by implementing emergency livelihood strategies that empower these households to rebuild their lives
