Sian Ka'an, deriving from the language of the Mayan peoples, signifies 'Origin of the Sky,' and situated along the eastern coast of the Yucatán peninsula, this biosphere reserve encompasses tropical forests, mangroves, marshes, and an extensive marine area cut by a barrier reef, fostering a diverse habitat for over 300 bird species and numerous terrestrial vertebrates characteristic of the region, all coexisting within its intricate hydrological system.
