TURKEY 1964. Cooks in workers' canteens prepare a meal.
Turkey , 1964. The World Food Programme (WFP), launched jointly in 1963 by the United Nations and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), uses food - much of it agricultural surpluses that otherwise would lie idle - to foster economic growth in developing countries. WFP aid to Turkey comes to about $6,5 million, aiding 12 projects fundamental to the nation's development.
The projects range from reclaiming blighted forests and eroded farm lands, connecting villages with secondary roads, resettling displaced families, controlling floods and soil erosion, to increasing production oi fertilizer, pulp and paper products, coal and steel.
At Zonguldak, Turkey's big coal basin on the Black Sea coast, almost $1 million worth of WFP aid is helping to expand significantly the basin's annual production.
Here, cooks in one of Zonguldak's many workers' canteens prepare a meal.
