Script Ladies and gentlemen,

1. I am so pleased to address the 49th Apimondia International Apicultural Congress— the world’s largest gathering of friends of bees.

2. This congress is a celebration of knowledge, innovation, and collaboration.

3. It reflects the growing recognition of the vital role that bees and other pollinators play in our ecosystems, economies, and communities.

4. FAO and Apimondia share a strong and fruitful partnership, formalized in 2021 through our MoU, which provides the framework for our collaboration and joint work on, among others, developing technical guidelines and practical manuals that promote sustainable beekeeping practices.

5. These tools are helping communities worldwide adopt approaches that are productive, environmentally sound, and socially inclusive.

6. We must remember that beekeeping is about much more than just honey.

7. Bees and other pollinators are essential to food security, biodiversity, and ecosystem health, and protecting them is not just an agricultural concern — it is a global imperative.

8. Because the sustainable management and conservation of bees and pollinators contributes directly to the Four Betters: Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life – leaving no one behind.

9. I also commend Apimondia for the invaluable contributions to the annual World Bee Day celebrations,

10. As well as for the joint initiative of the International Forum of Action for Sustainable Beekeeping and Pollination.

11. This year, FAO is celebrating its 80th anniversary – eight decades of working together to build a world free from hunger and malnutrition – which we will celebrate on World Food Day during the annual World Food Forum event from 13 to 17 October at FAO Headquarters in Rome.

12. I warmly invite all of you to join us on this important occasion to showcase how beekeepers and pollinators are making an essential contribution to FAO’s mandate.

13. Let us continue working together — for bees, for biodiversity, for people, for the planet and for prosperity.
