Background Information
The SocPro4Fish project, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and led by FAO, aimed to improve access to social protection for fishers, fish farmers, and fishworkers in Tunisia, Colombia, and Paraguay. In Tunisia, the project identified barriers to social protection access and promoted policies supporting economic inclusion, gender equality, and resilience in the fisheries sector. The project had concrete policy impacts, including the creation of an inter-institutional technical committee on social protection in fisheries and providing evidence for policy reforms on social security. Additionally, the project explored the potential of mutual societies as intermediaries for collecting social security contributions, which has legal recognition.
