TÜRKIYE 2025. Protecting and promoting Türkiye’s Bursa black fig and peach
5 August 2025. Bursa, Türkiye. Hacer Şimşek, who lives in the Karabalçık village of Bursa and harvests black figs with a geographical indication in her own gardens.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) team conducted a field visit to Bursa, Türkiye, to understand the economic and environmental sustainability of Bursa peaches and black figs, which have been granted geographical indication (GI) status. The visit also aimed to support the development of communication products that highlight the value of these GI-certified products. The mission was coordinated in collaboration with KöyKoop Bursa (Bursa Union of Agricultural and Village Cooperatives), the producer group that has submitted GI applications for Bursa peaches and black figs at both the national and European Union levels.

Background Information
Türkiye’s Bursa region is famous for its fruits and vegetables, enjoying a well-established reputation with consumers. Bursa black figs and Bursa peaches are now officially protected thanks to their respective geographical indication (GI) status nationally (obtained in 2018 and 2019) and at EU level (2024). A GI recognizes the link between quality and geographic origin and protects that link as an intellectual property right. FAO and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) supported Bursa producers, cooperatives and government bodies throughout this lengthy process, from developing specific codes of practice and defining quality and safety standards to registering the GI. This reportage looks at the economic, social and environmental impacts of the GI Bursa black fig and peach and how Bursa’s producers and cooperatives, cold storage operators, modern retailers and public authorities are protecting, marketing and promoting these GI fruits.
