Background Information
Kukhsori Ajam is a living seed bank in Rasht Valley, Tajikistan, preserving local varieties of apple, pear, apricot, peach, and mulberry. Founded by amateur botanist Akobir Mirzosho, the garden promotes biodiversity through cultivation, grafting, and seed saving.
The FAO project “Facilitating agrobiodiversity conservation and sustainable use to promote food and nutritional resilience in Tajikistan,” funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), aims to strengthen the conservation, sustainable use, and protection of Tajikistan’s nationally and globally significant agrobiodiversity. By supporting the assessment and maintenance of local varieties and wild crop relatives, improving regulations, and promoting fair and equitable benefit-sharing, the project helps ensure that rural communities, including women, youth, and disadvantaged groups, can improve their food and nutrition security, well-being, and livelihoods.
